1987 17.5 Foot Super Folding Folbot with Sail Rig (Lee Board Style with Lateen Rig)including rudder with hand tiller. Foot control rudder package also included. Very Good condition. Includes storage bags (two for the boat and one for the sail rig). Original assembly instructions. The "skin" is from approx. 1989 and is the "hypalon" type. Oars, seat back cushions, all hardware, everything that you need is included. I list it as in "very good" condition (and not excellent) only due to minor cosmetic issues due to normal use. Very well maintained. I'm not sure what a fair price for this would be. Please make an offer. Reply to r_slebodnik@msn.com

Hello Captfarby,
I saw many of your suggestions on boat repairs on the Folbot forum which leads me to believe you have some experience on FolBot repairs. I have a mid 80's super(?) two seater, rigid that my father and I built shortly after I graduated High school. Today the boat is in much need of repair, mainly a new skin. I'm hoping to acquire the haypalon skin from FolBot direct at $45/yard but wanted to check with someone like you to see if this is better/worse than the old vinyl hulls. Personally I would rather use a newer *lighter* material that can do the same job. I remember how heavy (@80lbs) the boat became after we applied the inner/outer double hull of vinyl along with two gallons of waterproof cement. I have been looking into a kevlar/fiberglass combo to reskin but the hapalon seems to be a cheaper route and is currently used by the new folbots. Do you have any suggestions on material and also HOW to reapply a new skin on an old rigid 17+ footer? As I recall, the hull materials were 'presewn' when we received the kit. Today the fabric would have to be sewn by me inorder to fit and at $45buck a yard, theres not much room for error on my budget. Also, I may be able to design a guidance system for some new Naval weaponry, or rebuild a motor/chopper from the ground up;....but when it comes to sewing something...........I can't sew to save my life.

ANY suggestions/advice will be appreciated!
Thanks for your time.

Remember the old stick and paper airplanes? Same principal. I cover the frame with thin material (thin canvas or one time bed sheet material. think of all the great color combos.)Use material glue or small takes to secure. Fiberglass using light material and resins. Makes a light boat. One off my re skinned kayaks done in 1970 has a good hull but wood eventually rotted out due to weather exposure.

good luck It will work

There is good stuff that is not that expensive. PVC coated Polyester is what another member used to recover his Super TSK a little while back (check the Pre-1990 Folbots forum, "1960's Super TSK" is the thread, I believe). It is not that expensive, if you can find the right supplier. Tom Yost is a regular on the Kayak Builder's forum on another site and he recommends his supplier which sells the stuff for approx. $5 per yard, 60" wide (I believe) material, I have seen it sold for almost three times that much. Mauritz Online, I believe is the company name. Anyway, I'll attach a link to Tom's online book, PVC Skinning chapter that illustrates how to work with this material in covering a kayak. Great info. for new homemade kayaks and old skin on frame re-skinning projects.

(Note: A link to Mauritz online is within the pages of the skinning chapter.)

Good luck,
Paul

It is a Folbot Glider. You have to find someone who treasures a SOF (skin on frame) boat because most current boaters have been romanced by the siren call of kevlar, fiberglass, or HDPE. And because the boat doesn't fold it has little allure to the bag boat folks.

I love 'em but my quota is one and it hangs proudly in the Hall of Recreation. Perhaps such a place could be found for your home.

Actually, it is a Big Glider. The Glider was 14-1/2 feet long and had a cockpit that was pointy on both ends. The Big Glider is actually a pretty nice sailing platform. this looks like a pretty nice one. Should have lots of good use left. Take it out and enjoy it.

Hello. I just aquired a vintage folbot red/white double seat kayak with sails. It is in immaculate condition with all parts including sails, deck cover but no paddles. I was wondering what this might be worth. I'm still uncertain about selling or using. I thought this might be something that should not be used since in such great conditon. It was assembled before i purchased it and looked just amazing. I also wanted to know how to determine how old it is. It is now in my garage in the 3 bags. Any help would be greatly apppreciated. I'm a kayaker in TN.

Thanks

Of course you should use it. That's how you find out how stable, safe and fun it is. If you hate it after the first outing, then sell it. Snap a picture and post it here so we can get an idea what it is and it's value (crop the picture to less that 100k bytes). Have fun...oh, BTW, Folbot Co. sells double paddles for as little as $50. You could have one or two in a few days.

Hi All,

Need to free up some cash (anyone want to guess why?). 1 year old yellow kodiak. It's in great condition and includes the expedition package, hull strips, and 3 brand new aluminum cross frames (what a huge difference). Because of the bright colour of the deck there are a few marks but nothing disfiguring. It's on ebay but if someone here contacts me perhaps we can negotiate and end the auction early (through "buy it now").

It is in toronto, but I will be making a trip to Washington D.C. on July 9th, so i can transport it there then (or ship from there)

I have a request someone maybe able to help me with.
Im a stage IV cancer patient. I had back problems 2 years
ago that final forced me to sell everything off.
Recently i found out I had a massive tumor that had went to my backbone/vertrabrae area and was listed in final chemo stages Tumor had moved form the lower lung area
I used to camp/kayak everyspare time I had.
But due to the disease and hospital costs had to sell everything off. Over a year ago
Including my Kayaks.
Now the Doctor is telling me paddling will help me in my bout to regain strength.
Does anyone have a folbot or Klepper that I could BORROW for a couple of months? NOTE I DO NOT want one donated !!!!!
Any older boat would be ok. as long as its folding, as it would be easier for me to load and unload. The seats is really what I must have like the folbots and kleppers. Any older boat that will float or i will have to do some repair on would be ok. I would maintain the boat for the term of the lending to the best possible means.
Im not in a place to buy a new boat let alone a used one. So Im writing trying to see if anyone has a older one sitting around that i sure could get some use out of in the best way. Sitting by a lakeshore and being able to paddle about for 10- 15 minutes sure would bring my muscles back up and do a world of good for my mind.
NOTE Im not looking for anything FREE !! Just to borrow one for a time
It would be returned at some point in as good if not better shape than
when i got it.
Thanks to all for considering this request, serious inquires should email me only off list.
I sure hope someone has a 20 yr old boat not being used, Cause i sure could use one for a spell.
Thanks

Dust, be careful on Yellowstone Lake! Those power boaters seem to be blind to anything smaller than a ferryboat. I saw a "tube" fisherman almost meet his maker with the help of a yahhoo in a bass boat and the poor guy was only 20 ft from shore! I think we all need to carry paintball guns and "mark" the jerks if they come into range. Then we can tell the rangers to look for the boat with 20 green sploches on it(:>).

That is the date on the lake use permit sticker that is stuck to the bow of the boat. I contacted Folbot and they could only tell me that it was probably a "Super" or "Glider" model. It is in amazingly good condition. There are two sets of wooden paddles. I guess you attach them together to make one long paddle with two ends. I am in So. Cal. I can send digital pictures. Hello!

I have a very nice Werner Camano paddle for sale. It is a two piece Carbon Fiber paddle that is 230cm. This paddle is very light (about 27oz). It is in very good condition (only some very slight dings on the blade). The shaft is smooth and easy on the hands due to the slight oval shape.

I have used this paddle very comfortably in a Folbot Greenlander and well as a single. This paddle is a real pleasure to use!

Several years ago I purchased a two-seater (that may now be almost 30 years old) from a friend when my significant other was able to indulge in strenuous activity. He no longer is able to do so. We have never used it. So, I'd like to pass on this lovely craft for a reasonable price to someone who will take care of it.

I'm not sure exactly what model it is but everything is "there" including the oars, storage bags and rudder attachment. It is really long and red/ blue. It has finished wooden seats and "skeleton." It is really in very good condition. There may be a small rip (that can be easily patched) in one of the storage bags.

I also have a small two-wheeled carrier and roof rack for a vehicle comparable to a 1986 Honda Civic.

Rigid Square Stern Folbot, circa late 1970's, with
a custom made trailer for sale. This folbot was
originally sold as a kit and was assembled by the
original buyer. It has been stored inside and is in
excellent condition. All seams are tight and the
wood trim is beautiful and in excellent condition.
The catalog says this boat can take up to a 7 hp
engine and shows a skier being pulled. It is
extremely stable and has two seats that have
been re-covered. The seat backs pivot so you
can sit above the gunwale as well in the bottom of
the boat. As you can see from the pictures the top
skin is a yellow color and the bottom skin is gold.
No rips or tears, but a couple of slight rub marks.
Nice and dry...no leaks. The square stern is 13-1/
2 feet long, 46" wide, 21" max. high, 13" side high,
space for 2-3 with a capacity of 550 lbs. The
cockpit size is 129" long and 26" wide and has a
solid wood bottom.

The trailer has new tires and wheel bearings,
working lights, and fits a 2" ball. It is a very heavy/
sturdy, custom made trailer for this folbot. No rust.
In addition to the square stern folbot, it will also
hold two canoes or kayaks.

We are located in east-central Illinois. Our asking
price for both is $400. Please e-mail with
questions. jcramer@mchsi.com

Thanks for looking.

For those responding to ads posted on here, here are a few tips.
It is always better to send a direct email to the person who posted the ad if you are interested in their item or just have questions. If you click on the person's username, their profile will pop up and it shows when they last logged into the forum. If they last logged in a month ago or so, it will probably do no good to post a question to them on here. Much of the time the person just posts an ad and then sits back and waits for emails or is advertising elsewhere also. The item may even be already sold.
If you click on the email of the person posting the message, your email program should launch with a new email so you can respond to the seller that way.

If you post and ad, please let me know if it sells and I can remove your ad to cut the confusion to perspective buyers. If you sell your Folbot or related item elsewhere, make sure you tell the buyer about our forum and about the Folbot web site. We always welcome new Folbot owners to the gang here.

Also remember, it is the responsibility of the buyer and seller to make this thing work. We have no control over the ads posted here so it's up to you to use the usual precautions when buying from an unknown private party.

Thanks for keeping this ads section a good safe place for people to sell or buy their gear. We have a great bunch of people here and we like to hear from you and how your experience went.

Hi, I've decided to sell my Folbot Super and have just listed it on eBay if anyone is interested. I am the original owner. It is a 1980 or 1981 (sorry can't remember) in excellent condition, with a complete sail rig and all original parts and accessories. The boat is located in NW Washington State. Sadly it just doesn't get used, so it's time for it to have a new family. Here's the link (with lots of photos):

About 10 days ago our Folbot (yellow 2002 Greenland II Expedition model) was stolen. It was in its bags (blue bags, yellow hull) in a friend's car, parked in front of their house in Albany, California, when the car was stolen. Now the car has been found in Oakland, somewhat damaged, minus the kayak.

I doubt most car thieves would know what to do with it (although it did have a set of photocopies on distinctive waterproof paper of the assembly and packing instructions in the bags with it), or how a thief would try to fence a Folbot. But if anyone tries to sell you a Folbot matching this description, or sees an ad for one, please let me know. (No, we we had not yet prominently marked our name on it, but I believe we can identify it convincingly.)

Peaceful paddling,

I've got a Folbot 17.5 foot double folding kayak for sale. The model is Folbot Super. It has a wood floor and frames with aluminum stringers. It is functional but a few tubes have some cracks starting or slight bend so it would be worth replacing a few (fairly easy to do). There are some small repairs to the skin and one small repair to a wooden frame. It's usable as is or would make a great restoration project if you wanted to make it into a showpiece. I do NOT have a sailing kit to go with this but do have a photocopy of the description of the sailing parts. Someone could make the leeboards, rudder, mast, and sails if they wanted to sail this boat. It paddles great and I've heard it's great for sailing, too. I also have a pair of Folbot wood double paddles. One of them needs one of the take-apart sleeves replaced (it's just a short piece of copper tubing or pipe) but the wood of both paddles is in good shape. I enjoy this kayak but it just doesn't fit my family's needs right now.
Here are some web sites with Folbot Supers (mine has a light blue hull with a red deck):
http://www.brunel.ac.uk/~acsrrrm/kayak/folbot/folbot.html
http://home.earthlink.net/~ccb03/folbot.html

It's located in Ann Arbor Michigan, but it could be shipped by UPS (at cost). I expect to be driving to Akron Ohio (likely in the next month) and could deliver it between Ann Arbor and the Akron/Cleveland area. The price of the Kayak is $400 plus $50 for the pair of paddles (I'd sell the kayak without them if you have paddles you like but won't sell the paddles alone (unless I sell the kayak first).

I also have a roof rack for a vehicle with rain gutters. It has metal clamps and wood cross bars. They are wide enough to hold two wide canoes side by side. Price $40, $35 if you want to save money on shipping and don't want the wood bars (I think they're ash but I'm not positive).

Email me off-list if you're interested or have questions.

I'm selling a rare Folbot 'Square Stern' 13 1/2 foot circa 1979. These boats are quite rare and I would rather it go to a Folbot affecionado before putting it on eBay. The boat is in good condition although the frames could use a fresh coat of varnish. The hull is red topsides on grey with no patches. There is no fading and the vinyl is in excellent condition. There is a slight scuff just aft of the stem but no leaks the last time it was in the water. Serious offers invited.

I was hoping to get a few dollars for this Super hanging in my garage but am fast approaching my move out date.
If anyone wants it all they need to do is call me and come and get it. In another week it will be chain saw time. Would hate to have to cut it up but will cost too much to put it in storage or ship and not worth it to me.
I posted a couple of poor pictures in a previous post. This is a double rigid Folbot kayak, that with just a roll of duct tape to make a small repair could be used, as is. With a little time and skill could be made in to something really nice. I saw the pictures Gobe posted but he is skilled. I also have the Folbot sail kit but I'm not letting that go for free. If someone wants the sail too that will cost $75. The kayak is free but you can have all boat and sail for $75. Which includes paddles, rudder, leeboards, rigging, motor mount. Must come and pick it up in Lakewood, Washington. Real Soon!

Hi,

Well, I managed to fit almost the whole description in the subject line. :) That's something, isn't it?

I am jobless (working on that), so I have no cashola for a boat. I am thinking about organizing myself and $ for an "expedition" to sail/paddle around the mediterranean or elsewhere, possibly along the coast of Turkey. I need to find a foldable sail kit as well. I'll try all this out on the chesapeake, or the marine trail in Maine, etc. I have plenty of experience sailing and windsurfing, and some kayaking as well (white and blue water). I will probably also rig/get some wheels for portaging.

In exchange I can help with planning trips, gathering info to Europe or elsewhere. (I walked about 1000 km through France and Spain on the GR10 and Camino de Santiago this past summer, and speak French, German, and a bit of Spanish.) I've also lived for a short time in Alaska, so can give info on that as needed.

For sale is a year-2000 Folbot Greenland II with every option included! The boat has only seen water about 6 or 7 times, and the sail rig only used twice. I live in western Washington and could deliver the boat to most anyplace in the Northwest if you'd like to save some money on shipping.

Here's what is included:
- Greenland II with full Expedition package (rudder, deck lines, padding on frame, etc.)
- Yellow deck and sprayskirt
- Upwind sail rig with yellow pontoons
- NO paddles. I got rid of the Folbot paddles the boat came with, and I'll be needing the paddles I have.

The boat and sail rig are in perfect condition with all original parts. The water repellency on the deck is still as good as new, to give you an idea of how little use the boat has seen. The carrying/storage bags are a bit dirty, but I will do my best to clean them before shipping or delivering the boat. This boat and sail rig would cost about $3300 new, plus shipping. Given that my boat is really as good as new, I think my asking price of $2500 is a serious bargain. Shipping would be extra, and I might have to charge a bit for gas if I have to drive a long way to deliver it.

If you have any questions or would like me to email you some pictures of the boat or see it in person, please let me know.

Need to get rid of a Folbot Super that has been hanging in my garage for the last couple of years. Not in best of shape but not really too bad either. Could use a little work and made to be a nice boat. Boat lives in Tacoma Washington area.

Ok just wanted to clarify what this is. Someone asked me to ship this across country from here in Washington State. Not possible. It is a 17 or 18 foot double rigid kayak that is at least 70 or 80 pounds. Here is a little description. It is brown and a rib cracked but not so bad, nothing that can't be repaired
fairly easily. The skin has some damage but could be patched and used the way it
is with just duct tape or better with a permenant patch job. I had thought of completely reskinning it and make it look nice again. Never got around to it though. I actually got it for it's sail, mast,
lines, rudder and everything. Since then I bought the new Folbot sail rig, which
I use on my other Folbot kayaks. The sail is in good shape, it's red and white Dacron
sail and brass hardware, aluminum mast, wood rudder and other hardware. It also
has an orginially pair of paddles but they need some work it you would want to keep
them, they could be repaired I suppose. You could have it all for $100 dollars
which is what I paid for it our just take the kayak alone for free, no cost except your time to get it from my house. If you want the sail kit and all accessories then $100.
The pictures are not very good since it is hanging in my garage and too lazy to take down right now and I guess I made the pictures kind of small but they give you a general ideal. If you are already familiar with the Folbot Super you already know. There are some other pictures available here on this site of rigid Supers. One picture shows the damage that I believe could be repaired on one end. As I said there is also a cracked rib but it is not too bad and still in place. It is in mostly good condition. The wood is a little chipped and cracked around the cock pit but not too bad. It is a little bigger than a Greenland II. The person who ever built it did a fairly nice job.
I would like to keep it and restore it in time but getting ready to move and need to clear it out. Would like to see it go to someone that can use it or even restore it. Richard Haugh

I bought two weeks ago a brand new Aquabound
Tripper paddle, 2 piece carbon fiber at 220cm
long, weighing less than 880 gms. I would like to
sell it for $150 plus shipping, it sells for around
$175.
It turned out to be too short for me, though
delightfully light and easy to wield.
I am also open to trading it for a used Werner
Camano of longer length in good shape etc.
This would make a great paddle for a smaller
person, man woman or child.
If you want to check it out go to New York Folding
Kayak Company into the paddle section.
Please contact me off list.

I'm not sure but I think the Super cockpit is wider than the Greenland II. I made a spray cover for my Super with vinyl material and snaps from a marine store(chrome plated brass). The vinyl is sold in most Walmart fabric depts. Mine held up for several years and worked great.

2001 Folbot Kodiak blue Expedition model for sale.
Purchased new May 2001. Perfect condition, no dings, no cuts.
$1200.00
Includes all Expedition options; including compass and bag of parts.
Folbot paddle, rudder and assembly; and all Folbot supplied parts.
Used only in fresh water, maybe 2-3 times, short day-trips only, less than 5 hours total.

Extras:
Folbot cover, blue (including added bungy threaded thru it)
Mariner flotation bags http://www.marinerkayaks.com front and rear
Mariner XL Dry Sack; 40”x20” (3000 cu. In.)
Mariner Rescue Float Plus (paddle float)
NRS small Sea-Stow bag
Foam cutouts for floorboards (above longerons), 4 pieces.
Extra rudder assy (homemade, aluminum, much smaller than stock)
Home-made cart (not too bad).
Velcro strips for longerons (not really needed however…).
PVC rack (1 ½”) for upside down storage (home-made)..
Extra bungies (hold rudder straight, etc).
Hull reinforcement strips applied, 3 on each side, reinforced at ends with Aquaseal, plus have 2 extra unapplied strips (had planned for along sides for barnacle protection).
Stainless eyebolts bow (replaced factory delrin version) and stern.
Several extra parts in addition to factory supplied bag of parts.

Currently unassembled
Reason for selling: back problems and surgery.
This boat will have to be picked up. I cannot ship it; can’t lift it (but I’m not desperate yet).
Perhaps someone on way to Flamingo Flotilla would be interested. I am not so far from that – maybe 1 mile off of I-95.
Please - only really serious, interested buyers.

I am the second owner of this blue two man folbot. Has rudder and spray skirt with two folbot paddles. I bought this late last spring and never put it in the water. Bought it from an older man who used it a dozen or so times, all in freshwater. Kayak is in like new condition, no tears whatsoever, hardly any signs of abrasion. You will absolutely not find a nicer used folbot. In seattle area, stored in apartment since I bought it, has the original two bags which are like new as well. No disappointments, $1100.00. call ed at 206-212-6417 or biggerkat@yahoo.com.

I am the original owner of this early 1970's one-man Folbot. I have used it mostly for weekend boating, and a couple of 2-week camping trips. All but 5 parts are original - 2 longerons, 1 nut-bolt pair, 1 turnbuckle & 1 cockpit fitting. All parts are in this package, including the repair kit, the portage yoke, the original carrying bags, even the sheet of naugahyde supplied for repairs. I also have several spare pieces of aluminum tubing ready to be converted into longerons.

Make me an offer!

An unsolicited testimonial: it is worth the low price. Somebody in the SE will get a real bargain. Someone in another part of the US will have to pay a little more, but will still get a bargain.

I have a complete super sail rig for sale.
or is it sale rig for sail. Who cares...

It is quite large...at least 12 feet tall and
about 6 feet wide. It comes with the
poles, sail, rudder, sideboards, tiller
board, tiller board extension, all the
trimmings except the rope. It is in very
good condition. I modified the sail with
brass grommets so I could tie the sail
into place on the mast rather than using
the sliding rib thing that is so difficult.
This also makes it extremely easy to
dissassemble and assemble while on
the lake! It will come in the sail bag also.

I am asking $250 for it all, plus the
shipping and handling. I don't use the
sail rig at all and don't believe I ever will. I
have already built a homemade
downwind sail rig that works somewhat
like an umbrella....works great and easily
stowable....and don't need the big bulky
think anymore.

Let me know if you are interested. I can
ship UPS anywhere.

email me if you want pictures and I can
send them to you. I will have to use the
wife's digital and get some first.

Judging from the type of rudder, that boat is probably a late 60s to early 70s model. I think the rudder shape was different later on and they went to the sliding pedals in stead of the rotating foot pedal. Those older ones are similar in design to the new style rudder pedal.

Any idea what the old rotating foot pedals where made of? Solid wood? Marine plywood? I made one out of the old control bar that is too flimsy. http://webkatz.net/kayak/gII.html so I'm going to try a from-the-ground-up one out of wood. Thanks, Dave Red Greenland II

I don't think so. Could be that's not a standard
Folbot rudder at all? The only rudder from that period that I'm aware of was the sailing rudder. It was controlled by a push-pull tiller, not foot pedals, and had a less rounded shape.

I picked up an old basket case rotted out Super a couple years ago that had this exact rudder. an aluminum bracket that connected to the rib of the boat and a solid wood cross bar pedal arrangement. I will dig out that piece. I still have it around somewhere. The rudder itself was that rounded one in the picture. I put it on my Sporty and picked up a pair of the sliding rudder pedals to use with it.
Here are a few pictures of it mounted on the Sporty.

Hi,

I have a yellow Kodiak w/ expedition package
purchased in the spring of 2002. I've used it on
about six day trips and on two multi-day trips. The
deck and hull were treated with 303 aerospace
protectant prior to use to prevent any color fading
from uv and the kayak is in excellent condition.

I am considering selling the kodiak in favor of the
new edisto which is better suited to my current
needs (I have a new family member who will
eventually ride with me).

I'd like to get $1,200 (includes folbot paddle) for this
kayak.

Drop me a note if you are interested.

Well folks ... I just picked up another Super TSK for a Winter rebuilding project and will consider 'trading' my gobe-built Super TSK for a Kodiak. If you're looking to upgrade to a very stable two-seater that's no longer in production, this is it. I built it in the Winter of 2000/2001 and used it twice in lakes. All glue joints are epoxy and there are fiberglass floors built into the fore & aft cargo areas. Pictures attached. If you have a Kodiak you'd like to trade or want to buy a 'second'/'blem'/'demo' from Folbot (see their ad) to trade for the TSK, e-mail me.

Before I post this thing on EBay I thought I would give this list a chance first. The boat is old but appears to be all there. I assembled the frame and it all was numbered and went together pretty quick even though this was my first time. My Dad bought this 15+ years ago from a guy who finished coming down from the Arctic Circle via Prince Rupert. No broken wood but a couple of the turnbuckles are either missing or not original. I was going to keep it and refinish the wood etc... but my wife doesn't want to go Kayaking so why bother. I don't really know what they are worth but I figure somewhere in the $US550 range should be adequate.

Five years old expedition model for sale $1200

Has little use and that is why I am selling. Too many boats, not enough people. Excellent shape. Has the aluminum washboards, and also the solo seat. Of course two paddles and is set up for the sailing mast so no drilling of holes, etc if you ever get the sail. Comes with rudder and the side rail foot pedals with aluminum wire and not the rope.

Has the swivel backs which I think are much more comfortable but it has the block seat bottoms so I have one comfortable camp chair seat bottom I will throw in.

Contact me by email and if you wish to speak to me by phone I will send that number to you back channel.

Buy it and come down to the Folbot Flamingo Flotilla at Flamingo Everglades in Feb and you will have so much fun it will pay for itself that one time.

2001 Aleut for sale. $500.00 plus shipping, or pick up in DC/Baltimore area.

Deck has faded from red to a fashionable dusty rose, but this has not affected the boat's speed (red is the fastest color, as everyone knows (:>)). Several minor nicks on the hull have been repaired with Aquaseal, a couple of others probably should be.

Comes with all expedition package accoutrements except the rudder:
expedition deck rigging and D-rings
spray deck and skirt
wilderness repair kit
padding on lower longitudinal frames

Boat cover included (blue).

I hate to let this boat go, but the Yukon is a better fit for me.

I remember when Maryanne and I paddled with you last year in the Everglades. We were in our fifteen foot Wilderness Systems Altos sea kayaks. skin.. if it's a folder.. it really doesnt' look good.. there's a company that'll build ya one, but at a terrific cost that makes a new boat look good.... if it's a non folder.. fabrics are available to do the job.. Try Seattle marine ....

Yes, Seattle Fabrics has Vinyl Polyester sheets, 60" wide and sold by the yard. You'll need about 3 to 3 1/2 yards per layer of floor, hull and deck. I'm not sure what thickness (weight) to buy. They sell it as high as 40oz.!

If it is the wood frame parts for the rigid Super, I can make them for you. If you will settle for marine fir or marine mahogany, it isn't too expensive. I can check my local supplier of these woods. If you want the aircraft grade birch plywood to match that on the old boats, it would be rather expensive. Let me know what parts you need and I will see what we can work out.

No, no! You can make something, I'm sure. There's all kinds of good marine and aircraft grade plywood available. You could even work up replacements for the hinges and latches if you had to. If the hull is good then you have a good boat. There are people on the board who can help. Ask Cliffy or John Haide (folbot).

Make me a reasonable offer!
It is time I get rid of this Super non-folder. I may be moving or at least heading out of town for a while and no since letting it hang from my garage ceiling any longer. It's big or at least a little bigger than the Greenland II I have, must be about 70 pounds. It can easily be cartopped though.
It has a varnished wood frame, seats and plastic or vinel material multi-layer skin, only single layer on deck or at least think so. Brown hull and tan deck. Metal along edges.
I have had it hanging in my garage for the last couple of years. Bought it a couple of years ago for the sail and decided to get the boat too, as wasn't much more. Then I ended up buying Folbots new sail. Anyway the sail and all fittings are in pretty good shape. The material is a little faded but not bad but the material is strong and no cuts or damage. I don't know how old it is but must be 20 or 30 years old but seems good condition. I believe everything is here though never had it assembled. Has mast, rudder, lines, pulleys and all and leeboards also motor mount or think that is what it is. I have a copy of the sail plans and how rig it and everything appears here. The builder appears to have done a pretty good job and mostly been well cared for. The guy I bought it from said he and his father built it but he wasn't sure what year. The boat is not in perfect shape but could be paddled or sailed as is or maybe with duct tape applied. I had planned on reskinning it. A little damage to the wood frame nothing serious. One long frame member is cracked and there is a little other damage but mostly cosmetic, nothing that couldn't be easily repaired in an afternoon or so. The varnish is all bright and smooth and doesn't appear any rot or water damage it seems real solid. But who ever buys it would have to check it out for themselves. Also it has two wood folbot paddles though they not in best shape as blades has delaminated. They could be used as is but should be repaired if wanted to keep the whole setup Folbot or maybe replaced.
I'm located in Lakewood, Washington, if not familiar that is about 40 miles south of Seattle actually just a little south of Tacoma. It would have to be picked up. I could deliver it if not too far but anyone wanting it would probably want to be able to car top it themselves anyway and I would want them to check it out as I said it is not perfect. It is probably worth about 5 hundred or maybe more if someone really wants it but I would not take more as I didn't pay that much myself. If no offers I will take less. Sorry for anyone outside this area Washington or Oregon as I don't think it would be worth it to try to ship it. Would look nice restored and probably with not not too much labor. Repair a couple of the frame members and put a new skin on it and it should look nice. I just got lazy and never got around to it and now need to move it out.
I also have a little 18 foot Buccaneer sailboat on a trailer if anyone interested in that, guess I am going to have to get rid of that too.
That's why I like my Folbot folders easy to take with you!

In the 1970 price list the folding Big Glider is $236. Of course there has been a little bit of inflation since then. Hard to say what a used one would cost. A lot depends on the condition. For me I would sooner save up for a Greenland II.

I have an old catalog. Some time in the next few days I will scan some of the pictures from the catalog and post them. -- Happy Folboting,

The Glider was never built as a folder. Are you sure it's not a Big Glider (16 ft. by 40 in., squared off cockpit ends)? I had a 1968 Big Glider at one time. Somebody who has one now will probably appear to help you, but if not I'll see how much I can remember of the details. In the mean time here is an overview.

The basic idea is that you put the bow and stern frame assemblies together separately. You then insert them into the ends of the hull. Now comes the test: You raise the floors so that they form an upside-down V with the block-and-horseshoe type latches engaging each other. By pressing down on the apex of the V the frame assemblies are driven into the ends of the boat, and the hull is tensioned. This can take a fair amount of force, and that's where the trouble can come in. Back then the hull was made of cotton canvas impregnated with vinyl. Wear and scrapes could open the way for water to get in and shrinkage would be the result. If that has happened then something will break before you can get the floorboards down flat. There are things you can do to work on this problem. Cliffy posted a number of suggestions some time back. You can find that post with a search.

When you say aluminum I assume you mean the longerons; the crossframes and keel ends were high-quality, birch plywood, 10 layers for the crossframes and 18 layers for the keel ends.

Whetstone Carbon Fiber 260cm paddle

I have a beautiful Whetstone Carbon Fiber 260cm paddle for sale. This paddle was custom made by Whetstone for the Folbot shaped boats. Whetstone discribes this paddle as: "Carbon fiber blade with S-glass reinforcement at tip. Carbon/glass shaft with ovaled index". It is a 2 piece, take apart paddle (of course). It is amazingly light for at 260cm paddle - weighing only 28oz. It is a real pleasure to paddle with.

If you have the Greenland II, this is the best size and length for this boat (especially if you are paddling in the back seat).

This special order Carbon paddle cost ~ $300 new. It has very little usage and is in great shape. I am asking $195 plus shipping. I don't think you could find a carbon paddle of any length for even close to this price!

Folbot Greenland II Tandem Kayak For Sale.

1997 model with tan deck and black hull. I bought
it for $1100 two years ago and added the
following: solo seating kit, solo spray deck and
skirt (green), new aluminum sideboards, new
rudder kit, newest rudder pedal, and keel
reinforcement strips. Includes unused wilderness
repair kit and two carry bags in excellent
condition, extra seat backs (old style fold down),
the old rudder pedals which work perfectly and
are great to use, a spare rudder pedal, and the
book The Complete Folding Kayaker by Ralph
Diaz, and spare hardware. These add-ons are
worth about $400.

The original owner had some work done on the
canvas deck by Folbot. Email for photo of deck to
see the result (deck now is two tones of tan).
There are no tears in the hull which is in excellent
condition. The boat is registered for use with a
motor in NY.

This boat is priced to sell because it’s now too big
for me but it’s in great shape and has many many
years of use in it. We just had it out for a three day
trip in the Adirondacks and it performed
beautifully. Please note that there are no paddles
in this sale.

Buyer can pick the boat up in Ithaca, NY or will be
responsible for all shipping costs. Price is $1200
or best reasonable offer. Contact me at

We have just acquired a Folbot Prowler. The boat is 14'8", 2 seater with no accessories. Non-folding frame has a few soft spots in the wood but nothing serious. The boat has been patched numerous times but is tested water-worthy. This boat has a setting for a sail accessory. We want to silent auction the boat to raise money for a missionary trip to Africa and need to know its relative value. I could easily be an enthusiast for these wonderful watercraft if I only had the time. I will provide a photo to help as soon as possible.

Purchased in April of this year with high hopes, but recent illness in the family pretty much eliminates time for paddling.

The deal:

2003 yellow Folbot Yukon, expedition package, pump, Aqua Bound Seaquel paddle, instructions, bags, deck and spray skirt, rudder (still in package), the works. Will also throw in a few other paddling doo-dads that I have, and some books, if interested.

Boat has been assembled four times -- three times for practice, and has only been in the water once. Other than that, boat has been
stored disassembled in bags. As far as I know, it is in new condition, minus whatever wear four assemblies would do.

I spent around $1600 for this in April; now asking $1200 plus shipping. Boat is located in Gresham, Oregon. Willing to ship.

If interested, please contact me privately through email.

I'm gonna toss this out for review.. cause I just dont' know..
since this new Krylon paint.. "Fusion" has come out.. good for plastics and etc.. I wonder in anyone has tried it on vinyl or even hypalon.. might make repairs for older boats .. such as the one requesting material here.. much easier with a non matching color material that could now just be painted with the new paint..??????
love to hear .. pro or con.. on "Fusion" paint uses..

I believe that this boat is from 1970. It is the classic two seater that you see on the front of the Folbot Holiday's Book. For as old as the boat is, it is in great condition. Will be moving in the next year and I would like to sell this boat to someone who is going to take care of it as I have. I am located in the Lake Norman - Charlotte NC area. I would be willing to travel to drop the boat off. The only thing that this boat has wrong with it is- there were some holes in the bottom, which have been patched up with shoe goo and some white duct tape. When the boat is on the trailer or on the truck, you can not even tell. I have one back cushion, which I am working on having recreated - if I can find the material. Please let me know if you are interested. kirklandjeff@yahoo.com

Group,
I am trying to set up a sail rig for the Yukon and am accumulating parts toward this goal.
I could use any type of sailing apparatus
(no outriggers) or plans at this point. It doesn't have to be Folbot necessarily, but it will resemble an upwind rig. If someone has a foresail-jib plan, I would be interested in that, too.

Why not a bag from Folbot? Not that expensive, and sure to fit. Long Haul has wonderful bags, but more money. Their phone is: (970) 856 3662. Last time I tried their web page was not working. If you do a search you may be able to find the thread from a little while back where somebody had found a wheeled bag that seems to be big enough.

I purchased this GII for $950. It is in good condition and I feel that it was a good buy except it is missing the carrying bags and the issue with the paddles below. I am thrilled to have it. My boys and I tried it out the first night. It is remarkably stable compared to a canoe and tracks great. We are planning several overnight trips over the summer.

The only problem we had was with the paddles. First...grin....we found out how important drip rings are! Second, the hollow tubes on the paddles tend to fill up with water and it runs out at the center joint when you pivot the paddle. Even with drip rings I would have been soaked. Does anyone have a suggestion to solve this? I don't know if they are Fulbot paddles. Maybe they are a cheap style the seller threw in. He had several hard shells. The paddles have no markings on them. We ended up using the paddles as canoe paddles. I found out immediately what a bad paddle is all about.

But for all the drips I'm just happy to be started down the Fulbot trail.

The Folbot paddles that came with the GII have the word Folbot on the end of the blades if they're like mine. They don't fill with water or leak at the joint. I think you should get at least the Folbot paddles. They're strong and abuse resistant -- maybe good for the children to use. Nevertheless, it is worth the money to upgrade to one of the Seaquels or Werners that Folbot also sells.

I have had six Folbots and am finding more rigids to restore. I do however have the frame from a folding super if anyone needs one.

I also have a sail. All the parts are there but the sail cloth has a few small mouse holes. The dagger boards are made from plain 1/2 plywood but should work if coated with epoxy.

You pay for shipping and handling and they are yours.

The answers depend on what the covering (I assume you mean spraydeck) was made of. If nylon, and it has seen a lot of sun, the best bet is to replace the whole thing. Check out Seattle Fabrics. Something in the "pack cloth" range is probably what you want. More expensive, but more resistant to sun would be coated dacron (aka coated polyester).

As for patches, adhesive material is available at places like REI, but in my experience, the patches do not last long. A patch of coated nylon, sewed on, with seam sealer over the stitch holes, is better.

Don't be intimidated about sewing up a new cover -- nylon or polyester sews well, and small errors in sizing are forgiven in large pieces like a spraydeck. A "walking foot" helps sew slippery stuff like nylon, but is not essential.

My mother is trying to find a home for an old Folbot that's been living in the backyard shed for about 10 years. It'll probably be easier to place if I could tell you what vintage/model it is! My best guess is that it's 20-35 years old.

The shed (and parent) are near Freeport, Maine; I'm 2,000 away, so my inspection powers are limited. Can anyone give me suggestions on identifying this boat? I can pass them along to my mom.

Not a lot you can do from so far away..
it's little things.. they kept them the same for so long. ..then subtle changes..
I'd stick with the "20 to 30 years old" range.. then describe condition to possible buyers..

If it's 15 feet long with one seat it's probably a Sporty. If it's 17 1/2 feet long with two seats it's probably a Super. Those were the two most common types. There were other types but not as many were made as these two. If the longitudinal frame strips (longerons) are wood then it is a non folding version. If the strips are aluminum tubing and there are metal brackets on the floor then you have a folder. Hope this helps.

Hi to all. Don't quite know what to do about this. People are basically honest. And I would think that kayakers are more honest than most. But US Gov't Justice Dept. just released info on massive web sales frauds and I may have discovered a problem.

One of the posted sales offers here by what appears to be a newcomer to this board also appears to be a bit shady insofar as he wont ship COD even if shipping is prepaid AND he won't show boat in person to a local...! I saved all emails to and from and am not lying about this and so I am wondering if I should post a caveat emptor under his ad to save some innocent a lot of trouble and a not insignificant financial loss.

(The seller now claims to just not like me ... but if someone else wants to try to buy his boat I am sure my friend in his neighborhood will cooperate with whomever in terms of making sure he has one for sale first. If he is just running some kind of thievery we can also alert the police.)

As a former real estate agent I could also advise anyone shopping here that they can contact a local realtor in any seller's neighborhood wherever a seller who is new to the board will not use COD. (I would also think new board member buyers would be willing to prepay all or part of the COD shipping so that no honest person can really lose anything.)

Meanwhile, Should I post a caveat emptor directly under this guy's ad? He appears to only want someone to send him a postal money order and may in fact have only a PO Box and no boat!

Sad if true - dolliee

The other way to do this is to make use of Escrow.com -- for a small fee, they will hold your money until you (the buyer) are satisfied. If you are not, then the boat goes back, on your nickel, and the money is held until the seller receives the boat back in acceptable condition -- when it is released back to you.

You might propose that.

In addition, you could "ask" the person via a posting on the Web Board, if using an escrow service is OK (unless this violates a Web board caveat).

hi- I wrote to John as you suggested. But please understand that pickup was not my idea but part of his offer. So when he rejected both pickup and COD and the boat was still not sold because he was still urging me to send him a postal money order... (!?!) - thanks dolliee

Hi Dolliee:

I know you have been looking for awhile..........................there comes a time when maybe its time to just jump in and do it!

1. If you want a completely safe buy then just buy new and have Folbot send you a new kayak! If you don't like it they'll take it back.
2. Buying used is great if it is your 3rd (or is it 4th) kayak but for the first make sure it is what you want.
3. I always differentiate between primary and secondary usage. I bought my Current Design Solstice GTX for me! I bought it new and it has served me well for 5-years on the Chesapeake Bay, in rivers, in Canada and on the Atlantic. I bought a Super TSK (relatively cheap) for friends, my boys, etc. the risk was low because it is not used every day.

So my advice:-) Dig deep, stop procrastinating and buy a NEW boat. Then you can haggle, worry, etc. over someone else's listing.

Sorry wasn't intended as a lecture but as Nike say's "Just Do It"!

Michael
Current Design Solstice GTX (mine), Wilderness Systems Chaika (my wife's), Folbot Super TSK (my boys and visiting friends), two homemade (when I was 14) fiberglass kayaks (for visiting friends).

Sorry Michael, but I do believe that today is the 12th of April and I have been looking since the 7th of April ( and 5 days doth not a career make).

Also I actually have bought one already and as soon as I receive it I intend to write up this great seller (from this board) right here with a lot of praise, since he even gave me a discount.. Because the caveat emptor seller was such a heartbreaker the seller I bought from felt sorry for me and lowered the price.

As to buying new, that is the thing to do when one is certain of their preferences. I would rather learn on a used one.

Meanwhile I am still in the market for a square stern sail boat and would actually buy a second tandem so I am not closing my ad.

I hear the one who has the most toys... wins.

thanks
dolliee

Also, Michael, as it turns out Folbot management has thanked me for these caveat posts since what i ran into was not a joke and someone had to warn people. Certainly Folbot cannot guarantee anything posted here and everybody knows that.

When you find an ad like I did and you don't haggle for price and you finally offer the guy what he asks and tell him, since he wont ship COD, that your friend in his neighborhood will pick it up for you and pay cash and do the shipping ... EXACTLY as his AD offers.. and all of a sudden he says he does not like you and you truly have done nothing but be careful... well it is time to worry about others as well.

Anyway, I am also glad I recommended using real estate agents when both COD and Escrow fail. That way you can at least check there is really a boat for sale if a seller is being difficult.

Hello to all. I've been scrolling through the forum for awhile, which has been very helpful for me, and I guess here's a topic I want to add my 2-cents to. Buyer Beware is very sound advice. I recently had a nightmare experience on eBay with a dishonest seller, and although I still do think that MOST people are honest, you certainly can get burned buying on-line. I bought 2 Aleuts described as "like new, hardly used." I paid what seemed to me near top-dollar for used boats, based on that description. They arrived with lots of scrapes, what look like mildew stains on the hull, very noticeable sun-fading on the deck material, and one bow frame-spreader broken. I contacted the seller, told him I didn't think that they were "like new," but that I could live with it all if he'd at least arrange to have a new frame spreader sent to me. His response: like new means whatever he says it does, and a boat is still "functional," without a frame-spreader. I could return the boats or shut up. I felt that, on principle I needed to hold him accountable rather than rewarding dishonesty, so said I'd rather pay return shipping and get my money back-- to which he agreed. Two months later, he has failed to refund my payment. Now, I don't have the boats, and he still has the money. And whatever you might think, eBay actually does very little to help in such cases. (I think he was actually already allowed to re-sell them on eBay.) MAYBE sometime in the next 3 months eBay will give me a PARTIAL refund for my stolen money-- but that's a maybe, and that only if the credit card company refuses to cover the now fraudulent transaction. Buying something like a kayak sight-unseen is a risk that you as the buyer take. Yes, MOST people are honest, but there are certainly a few petty crooks out there, and they will happily take advantage of a trusting person. So; buying used on-line? I might still do it myself, but do ask lots of specific questions, and do document the seller's replies; saved email is a handy way to prove what was said/claimed by the seller. But, if you do get burned, realize that small-claims court (in the seller's locale, not your own) might be your only final back-up. AND, as a PS: Prior to my used Folbot purchase, I was a happy and somewhat frequent eBay buyer. But, besides learning that eBay's "Fraud Protection" has little in the way of teeth, when I took the boats to UPS to ship them back to the seller, the UPS Store folks told me that they see a steady stream of stuff being returned by eBay buyers who felt that been lied to or otherwise cheated by a seller. Sadly, Buyer Beware is indeed a phrase to bear in mind.

Wow that experience really bites.
You are obviously a much more patient person than I. Just wondering...have you taken up discussing your refund with the idiot at ohhhh say 3 or 4 am?
I trust that you have left negative feedback on eBay about this seller. There's a good chance he has done it to others and will continue to.
The biggest mistake was giving him a second chance to do you wrong. He lied once, and being a trusting person (like myself) you trusted him to do the right thing the second time around. I use Paypal on the rare occasions when I use eBay. Personally I don't consider buying anything on there without considering the possibility that it's a scam.
Sorry that you had this experience and I hope it gets resolved soon.

Hello -
I am interested in any "used, relatively good condition" Sporty or Super old-model Folbots" in the Pacific NW area. I am from Rochester, NY. . it seems like the best used boats are still deep east, but if anyone knows of any that are available to an expatriate I'd greatly appreciate it. I already have one of both plus as jr. But I have unFORTUNATELY, fallen in love w/a man w/3 kids (+ my dog/cat). I need a LARGER Armada. Please keep us in mind!
I already have a Super that needs to be re-built. . .I (We) are in need of immediate gratification (FISHING)!
Please let us know,

Hi All:

Just wanted to let everyone know that I picked up George's "Sporty" last night. What a great looking boat! George kept it hanging in the garage so it is in great shape and my kids will love the addition to the kayaking fleet. They love the Super TSK because they can stand and dive out of it it is so stable.
I drove from work in Wilmington, DE to Bristol, CT. picked up the boat and drove home again. A good 9-hour day but well worth it. Thanks again George, the boat never budged. Great boat and thanks for listing it on the Forum. It will get the same tender loving care that you gave it.

The Square Stern.. was available in kit rigid form, and in folding versions.. both will be tough to find.. it's a bit heavy, and more complicated to assemble.. but a terrific boat for lots of purposes...
.The "Sport About" model was rigid only, plywood boat.. so avoid even looking at one of those if you need folding.....

folding sailboats are rare. Look for klepper versions including the "passat".

Trinka Marine
http://www.tinkerinflatables.com/home.htm

makes an inflatable boat that can be rowed sailed and powered. For about $3,700 you can get one with the sail rig. I understand they sail pretty well, basically an inflatable catamaran, with a pointed bow. Saw one at the Annapolis Boat show and they appear to be well built.

The Explorer was basically a single seat Super. One could rebuild an old Super and easily convert it to an Explorer.
There wasn't an expedition version of the Sporty. Not, that is, until I added expedition rigging to mine last year. See photos elsewhere on the forum.

Dave,
It is a Big Glider. Don't see many of these around any more. Looks like it is in nice shape. I sure would like to get measurements of this boat sometime. It is one of the non-folding Folbot models that I still need for my collection of plans.

hi - I sent you email. I am not familiar with anything older than the Pisces and from reading here there seem to be a lot of different Folbot models called "Super". I need one that is 2 person and at least 16 feet or more and must be the folding type. Do all "super" models fold? And if anyone has the specs on this one for sale please reply. thanks- dolliee

Only one "super".. there was a "super junior" also.. but smaller..
The 'Super' is 17 1/2 feet long, 37 inches wide, 2 seater, weights about 80 or better lbs.. folders have wood frames and aluminum longerons, kit built or Portable {factory built kits} will be all wood framed.. Folders are listed as "TSF".. kits are "TSK".. they were discontinued, no parts available.. but a good one is good for many more years..
Hope that helps some.....

hi cliffy! THANKS! Any info on how hard the Super F was to put together or is it much like greenland II? The skin was vinyl and not hypalon, right? Can that mean a patch problem if needed I also went to your GREAT website. Thank you for that too. I wish the person above from Rochester NY would answer my email or post sold. If any reader has had contact with him and either knows his price or if his boat is sold please tell me as there is another I want to buy except that I have been waiting to hear from Rochester. What a nice crew here! I WANT MY FOLBOT! thanks again - dolliee

I am interested in purchasing my own kayak. Although I have used kayaks and have canoed for a long time, but this will be my first boat. I am very excited about the opportunity but don't want to make any hasty or poor decisions.

I am a single 40'ish female. I know my lifting ability doesn't support much and I won't have much help because I will be alone almost all the time. Most of the use would be on the Susquehanna river. A folding kayak seems ideal but I don't know how it would perform compared to a traditional closed cockpit kayak.

I would appreciate not only the opportunity to buy a boat, but any suggestions and recommendations anyone would be able to give me to enlighten me on a final decision.

Thank you in advance for your input and I look forward to hearing from you.

The Aleut is the smallest, lightest and easiest to assemble of the Folbots.

Hopefully someone in your area with a Folbot will offer you a test drive.

I'm guessing you are up above the tidal portion of the Sus? Pretty rocky up there. For grinding over rocks I would tend toward a cheap/used plastic/rotomolded boat. But maybe you have your heart set on a frame and skin?

Hi Lizanne:

Sailboy is right. If you are planning on paddling above Conowingo Dam in some of the stretches that meander through PA with very few rocks then either a folding, plastic or lighter still a composite boat would work for you. On the other hand from Conowingo down to Susquehanna State Park is very rocky and I would not use a composite or a folding kayak.

There are practical reasons to own a folding kayak and then there aesthetic reasons, which you have to decide on for yourself.

1. Do you have someplace to store a 13-16' kayak, fully assembled? You can hang from the garage ceiling with pulleys, side mount on a wall, or store in a shed. If no then a folding kayak and if yes then any type.

2. Type of kayaking: Rocky-go with plastic. They can take all sorts of abuse but weigh more. In conditions with some rocks and you're willing to exert some TLC on the boat, then a folding kayak or composite will work fine.

3. Mobility: Are you in a job or a position where you travel around and as you pass that body of H20 you just want to be able to stop, open the trunk, put together your boat and start paddling.

4. Aesthetics: Unless you just can't store a regular kayak, probably the biggest reason for purchasing is aesthetics. Assembling the boat, putting on the skin and getting ready to go.

5. Sailing: Some of the folding boats are more easily configured for sailing.

Anyway you are in a great area to kayak and don't forget that there is BIG body of H20 south of you, the Chesapeake Bay. Check out the Chesapeake Paddler Association website at http://www.cpakayaker.com

We have local kayaking trips on the Bay all summer for beginners and intermediate paddlers. If you decide on a folding kayak I don't think you would be dissapointed with a Folbot.

Ms.
Our family owns an Aleut, a Kodiak, and a Feathercraft Kahuna. By far, the best bang for the buck is the Aleut. The boat is very ,very stable and predictable and is of exceptional quality. The Aleut is a no-brainer to put together and is very seaworthy. It tracks like a train on rails so you don't need a whole lot of skill to get it to go straight. Most of my travel is in a straight line and I will gladly trade off super-quick turning for straight tracking. This boat is very easy to get in and out of (I'm 52 and a klutz)and it is very spacious and dry. These features allows me to use it into December here in the Cleveland area. You don't have to take it apart every time. I leave the boats assembled(indoors of course)most of the summer. Car-top it to nearby water if you can.
The Kahuna is more responsive and is a better boat but it costs twice as much. The Kodiak is a great boat too but is heavier and costlier than the Aleut. Most kayakers like me never go on extended voyages and just putter around for a couple of hours, fish a little, eat three Twinkies and go home. You can buy a used one in great shape for about $7oo to $800 and it can be all of the boat that you will ever need. Don't get caught up in dreams that never materialize. I paddle with a guy that spent almost $5000. on a Klepper Quatro and the Aleut keeps up just fine and goes where his goes. If you don't wreck it or let the mice eat it the Aleut will always be worth $500.The product support that you will get from Folbot is beyond belief-something breaks-they make it right.
We also have two hard kayaks but rarely use them.
Once you use a folding boat you will never go back.
Find THE FOLDING KAYAK by Ralph Diaz in the library. This is the Bible. New book out this month-buy the new one.Use the WEB-----Foldingkayak.org (I think this is the exact site- great source of information. If it's not do a search under folding kayaks.
Lots of great water in Eastern Pa. I grew up near Scranton.
Good luck.
Respectfully,
Bill

I'd like $100.00 for it. I looked at the new one for pricing, but I really have no idea if the older model is worth what I am asking.

"GOOD HOME" responding to your offer of Feb.17th. I am a recently retired 65 year old FOLDBOAT enthusiast who is looking for a 17.5 ft. Super to restore. I have my original Super from the late 60's, but having lent it out over the years to people who left it out all winter in the snow, it is in pretty bad shape. Now that I have the time to enjoy the sport I would like to rebuild the Super, but it may take 2 old boats combined due to missing/warped parts. I would be happy to pick up if local[I am in MA],or let me know what the shipping charges would be.Thanks, Ron LaPierre [e-mail] ronlap@hotmail.com

Hi All:

I picked up Rick's "Free" two-seater this past Saturday. Rick and I scratched our heads a bit but finally got it on top of my Mazda Protege. It wouldn't even come close to fitting properly in my Thule upright kayak carriers.

For those of you who were interested in it I can tell you that shipping as legal freight would have run between $400-$800 with a company like ForwardAir.

Condition: Probably the best part of this boat were the accessories that Rick kindly gave me, which included two wooden Folbot paddles in decent shape and two red back rests, which slip over the backs. It is (or was) a TSK with the metal bumpers. Most of the wooden frame was rotten and the deck was irretrievable. I salvaged some of the pieces, which I will measure and trace and see if anyone, such as John Haide, wants them for a parts library. I skinned the hull, which is brown, so if anyone is in need of patch material from this era I will gladly donate to the cause (just cover shipping costs).

For anyone still looking for a TSF Jim Brown still has one available for ~$500, which I think is a pretty good deal considering the condition of their boat. They are in NC somewhere and John's email is whitedove@starfishnet.com. If you had paid to have this shipped to you I guarantee that you would have been dissapointed.

Thanks for the report Michael and the offer for the tracings. I will not need them for the Super TSK though since I have a complete boat and have salvaged another that sounds like it was very similar to the one you got. It was kind of scary to haul the one I got from Astoria. I was afraid it was going to break in half from the rotted frame. :-). It was useful for metal fittings and the like though. I hope to someday find a Folbot Jr or tracings for one so I can use the metal castings I have and reproduce one.
I am still looking for Big Glider, Junior, Jiffy, Racer and Square Stern dimensions/tracings. I have Super, Super Jr., Sporty and Glider covered so far, so if anyone needs dimensions or tracings for parts for those, drop me an email.

a suggestion you might try. use aircraft grade dacron. buy it at Aircraft spruce and specialty by the yard. it's heat shrinkable with a heat gun or iron. build a skin from it using some glue, sewing machine, and pencil. assemble the fabric on the boat. pin it in place, mark, remove and sew. shrink to fit. the fabric shrinks approx. 30% of it's size. after shrinking, carfully cut it off to form a pattern. use this to build your final hull pattern from.

it's not as difficult as it sounds.

another option that is even easier. if you don't want to disassemble the kayak, you can apply the same fabric as mentioned and put a thin layer of fiberglass cloth (s cloth)over the dacron. use epoxy resin (west systems) to waterproof. will make a nice waterproof kayak, but of course is not disassemble able.

That heat-shrink Dacron method is very slick, Newfolboter. I seem to recall that the skin boat crowd uses something similar, followed by a one-part paint-on Hypalon coating, that makes the fabric very tear-resistant, and waterproof. This method is much lighter but not as durable as the epoxy/FG method.

Got any experience with the paint-on Hypalon stuff? I've seen it on skin boats, but have never used the stuff.

There is a site for "Geodesic Airolite Boats" that sells kits, plans, and materials for building ultralight boats using heat shrinkible aircraft dacron. There is a lot of information about the materials and processes, including pro/cons on painting, fiberglassing, etc,the dacron. A very interesting site!

i have quite a bit of experience with the fabric covering process. it's really quite easy and i feel perfectly suited to solve the problem here. the structure of a kayak was derived from an aircraft fuselage design or vice versa. either way, they are almost identical.

regarding the hypalon paint, i have no experience with it other than trying to rejuvinate an old raft when i was a kid. i have also patched helicopter floats in the past and it worked. came in grey color i think..

anyway, i don't see why it would not work. take a piece of the fabric and make a test. paint, let dry, and expose to the elements. i think it would work.

Hey Jim:

I hope my plug under "old 2-seater free to good home" helped. As we discussed a few weeks ago over email if I had emailed you a couple of weeks earlier (before your PA visit),I would have had you drop it off on the way to visit your son in PA! Oh well, I hope it found a good home! I plugged it cause for the price it was a great deal! Hopefully someone will sail it.

I was wondering if your kayak was still for sale. But, first I have a few questions for you: What kind of condition is it in? Did you find it comfortable? And finally, did you enjoy using it? Thank-you,
Greg

Dear Mr. Gratz
I might be interested in trading an assembled assembled 14 1/2' Folbot Glider. It is in real nice shape and includes oars and seats.

Too all that may be interested...I have the lateen sail rig for the square stern. The crossbar is longer and the rudder attaches via pintles and has a tiller. Will sell cheap to a square stern owner only please.
