Square-Stern ...bag dimensions? ...seat pattern?

Postby tstockma on Wed Jul 28, 2010 1:11 am

I bought a Square-Stern last year, missing the seat bottoms & with a couple broken parts. It's finally getting close to ready for the water...many, many hours of sanding & varnishing later. It also came missing the canvas bags.

Can someone who owns one, tell me the measurements of your canvas bags? I plan to sew a replacement set. Does yours go back into the bags easily, or should I add a couple inches in each direction?

Also, could this fellow owner also trace your seat bottoms, and shrink down an image or send that pattern via snail mail? I could use my Glider seat bottom for patterning, I'm thinking this boat might use a wider "footprint"...

according to the old catalogs the bag dimensions are 21x10x43 and 16x5x55 inches. I have no idea what the fit would be like but I would probably add a little room for extra gear like seat cushions, pfds, etc. It never hurts to have a little wiggle room for packing.

That looks great. I would like to have a square stern folder.

Thanks, Chad, that's a great starting point. And yeah I'll add some wiggle room, maybe the seat cushion room too.

John--yeah I was pretty happy to spot this last year, then had a looonnnng period of dreading the work, now that it's getting closer I'm pretty excited about getting it in the water.

I would like to make a true trimaran based on a square stern folder. The lofty concept would be to build a pair of folding amas from a scaled-down existing 3-frame folder plan. With addition of a sailing rig and working the rest of the package out, the result would be a real expedition outfit that would fit in the backseat and trunk of a Honda Civic. Just a dream until some other projects are out of the way. Hope I have time.
What is the length and beam of the folder? What is the name of the design, just Folbot Squarestern?

Ozarque, that sounds like a very ambitious but also a very fun plan!

My bible for all things to do with specs, measurements, capabilities etc of the vintage boats is Flatwater's most excellent Vintage Folbot resource pagehttp://home.comcast.net/~jrburch_h/folbot/identify.html. Since I've only had my Square-Stern put together once, just before I started the sanding, I will use the ad Flatwater has there, for the Squarestern & Runabout boats.

That page says 13-1/2 feet long, 46 inch beam. And yup, it's simply called the Squarestern.

I have a squareback - nonfolding Folbot. I'd be glad to take any measurements you'd need if it's the same size. Just let me know. Or feel free to email me at rgd0402@yahoo.com. Just put something about Folbot in the subject line. I can email you pictures of my squareback to compare to yours if you'd like.

I'm not real familiar with all the Folbot models and specifics. I just happened to stumble upon my boat and bought it.

rdoyle,
I don't have a square stern Folbot, but I am interested in knowing the length and breadth of your square back boat.
What kind of wood does it appear that the longitudinal battens, the long thin strip parts of the skeleton frame, are made?
Did the plans for this boat survive?

I sent you a message to your account. I'll get you those dimensions soon.

I created a online album with the photos of my Folbot. If you would like to see any of these in more detail, I can send you the full resolution photo. Just provide me your email address. This is the first of these I've created, but I think it's open to anyone. And I think others can upload photos too.

Also, I do not remember if my boat came with the original instructions, but I'll check when I get home. I think it came with a 1 page about how to setup the sailing rig. Chances are since mine is a non-folding, it was assembled in 1974 and those were tossed. I'm not sure what kind of wood it is on mine. It has a really thick varnish or polyeurothane finish.

Hopefully this helps.
